Canon lens lineup may be a bit confusing for any new owner Canon SLR or DSLR camera. The main reason for this may be because the manufacturer Canon offers over 60 interchangeable lenses for SLR and DSLR camera series.
This lens lineup includes Primes, Zoom, Tilt & Shift, Macro, Wide Lens / wide, telephoto lenses and super telephoto lenses.
Although Canon manufactures many types of lenses, the EF lens lineup is the most popular, because this lens for EF mount compatible with all Canon DSLR and SLR cameras.
In addition, Canon also manufactures EF-S lens lineup that fits on various Canon cameras with APS-C CMOS sensor, such as the Rebel series. EF-S lenses can only be used on APS-C cameras, but this camera also can use the normal EF lens. Each Canon EF lens can be grouped into one of the following classes:
Prime lenses (Fixed)
-Super Telephoto - Prime of 400mm and more like the EF600mm f/4L IS USM, used for photographing birds, wildlife and sporting events.
-Standard and Medium Telephoto - Prime between 50 and 100mm, as EF85mm F1.2L II USM. Good for portrait.
-Telephoto - Prime between 100 and 300mm, as EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM. Typically used for wildlife and sports photography.
-Ultra Wide - Prime usually with a focal length of 20mm or less, like the EF14mm f/2.8L II USM. Typically used for photographing the landscape.
-Wide/Lebar - Prime between 20 and 50mm like the EF35mm f/1.4L USM. Used primarily for landscape as well.
Zoom lens to Regulated
-Wide Zoom - Zoom with a focal length that begins between 16 and 22mm, such as the EF17-40mm f/4L USM. Useful for landscape and wedding / marriage.
Standard-Zoom - Zoom which begins between 24 and 28mm and a range of between 70 and 200mm, such as the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Useful for weddings and portraits.
-Telephoto Zoom - Zoom which starts at 28mm wide end with a range of between 70 and 300mm, such as the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, this is one of the popular Canon lenses. Used for a variety of applications such as wedding photography, wildlife, birds and street photography.
Macro lens
Lenses used for macro photography, such as the EF180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.
EF-S lenses
Lens with a special mount that can only be used with the sensor APS-C Canon cameras, such as the Rebel series. Cameras with APS-C sensors have a 1.6x multiplication effect on the normal EF lens, so the need for lenses like the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is useful for landscape photography with the Rebel series.
Tilt & Shift Lens
Lens as special f/3.5L TS-E24mm used for architectural photography. In each class listed above, except for the EF-S class, the lens "L" special high-quality match. The lens is made of special material, usually weatherproof, heavy and produces images with amazing sharpness and quality.
